Cadence Lab

cadence The aim of the Cadence® Academic Network is to promote the proliferation of leading-edge technologies and methodologies at universities renowned for their engineering and design excellence. This knowledge network among selected universities, research institutes, industry advisors, and Cadence® was established in 2007 to facilitate the sharing of technology expertise in the areas of verification, design, and implementation of microelectronic systems.

The department of Fundamentals of Electronics of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology Iasi has been using Cadence® tools since 2002 in several areas of education and research, supported by faculty's microelectronics, nanoelectronics and optoelectronics specialization track.

Currently, several courses applications benefit from Cadence® software:
Technological fundamentals of microelectronics (Cadence® tools used for schematic capture, layout and physical verification – DRC, LVS, etc.)
Analog VLSI design techniques (Cadence® tools used for schematic capture and circuit simulation of analog VLSI circuits design)
Digital VLSI design techniques (Cadence® tools used for schematic capture and circuit simulation of VLSI memory circuits design)
Advanced analog VLSI design techniques, a master-level continuation of bachelor-level Analog VLSI design techniques course
RF VLSI design techniques, a master-level RF design course and project

Our research activity pertaining to VLSI IC design almost entirely relies on Cadence® software, including:
• schematic capture
• layout
• physical verification
• analog and mixed-signal simulation
• RTL synthesis
• logic equivalence checking
• functional verification
• design for test

Another important area where Cadence® tools are used is within an unprecedented project involving three major Romanian technical universities: "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iasi, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and Politehnica University of Bucharest, aiming at bridging the gap between academia and industry in analog/digital VLSI design.
Teams from these universities have successfully implemented a chip in AMS's 0.18um HV process. Professors and students have equally been involved in the process of circuit design and layout, PCB design for testing and measurements. The project is encouraged and supported by members of the Romanian IC industry and it hopefully will move onto the design of a second chip.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for EU, European Economic Area (EEA) countries and the Swiss Confederation citizens:

The citizens of EU, EEA country and the Swiss Confederation may apply for admission under the same conditions, including in terms of tuition fees, as the Romanian citizens. For other information regarding admission, the necessary documents, fees, etc you can contact the faculties and visit their websites.

In addition, candidates from EU, EEA country and the Swiss Confederation will present for admission:
1. The certificate of recognition of studies: please visit the website of the Romanian National centre for Equivalence and Recognition of Diplomas (CNRED). The website offers extensive information regarding necessary documents, applcation forms, fees, etc. Applications can be submitted to the Ministry of National Education - National Center for Recognition and Equivalence of Diplomas starting May 1st, 2013 till September 30th, 2013.
2. The language certificate.
The certificate for recognition will be sent to the university or issued to the owner of the study documents / another person empowered by the owner of the study documents.
According to the CNERD Regulation, the evaluation period is 30 days, if the file is complete.
Attention! CNERD is free to ask for any further evidence concerning one’s studies.No application is examined if all required documents have not been submitted. The documents can be submitted at the Ministry of Education Registration Office or can be submitted at least with 30 days before the end of period of admission, to the university in which admission is sought.


All foreign students will be hosted in the "Tudor Vladimirescu" University Campus. Rooms with 2 and 3 places are available. The campus has recently undergone a major rehabilitation process and offers highy quality conditions. Additional facilities include a student canteen, numerous restaurants, caffeteries, and sports grounds. A major mall is also located inside the campus.

Since 1993 our faculty organizes a series of major scientific events with an international attendance, in cooperation with IEEE and the Romanian Academy:

European Conference on Intelligent Systems and Technologies (ECIT)

We are also hosting presentations offered by scientific personalities and industrial partners.
